A hot gas bypass is an excellent way to keep an evaporator coil from freezing in extremely low temperatures. It is a valve that can be added to an HVAC system and it works by introducing high pressure, high temperature gas to the evaporator/suction side of the system.
In the event a HVAC coil becomes frozen, the system will have to be shut down. Aldo cold temperatures cause contraction, metals can bend, break and crack under pressure, and creating holes, permanently damaging the coil.
With large HVAC systems responsible for regulating airflow in hundreds of thousands of square feet, the cold has a disproportionately higher chance of making a negative impact on these units. That's why it's necessary for companies to take steps to protect against the winter elements at all costs.
If your HVAC’s load on the evaporator varies to the point the system is operating below the design conditions, or it is located in extremely cold weather, a hot gas bypass circuit should be incorporated into the system. This will prevent evaporator coil frosting and will minimize compressor cycling.
